Renaissance is a visually impressive
movie. It uses contrast in black & white, reminiscent of a
Frank Miller graphic novel. However while at first the visual
approach is appealing it soon wears out its welcome. The action
sequences become tough to follow and it is difficult to
differentiate between the characters that have been introduced and
new ones. In addition, Renaissance suffers from plot and pacing
issues.
Fans of Phillip K. Dick’s work will be reminded of Blade Runner and
Minority Report because Renaissance uses the cyberpunk genre
heavily. The sad part is that Renaissance doesn’t branch out from
the genre at all. Bartholomew Karas (voiced by Daniel Craig)is no
different than the characters Deckard or Anderton.
Overall I’d like to recommend Renaissance due to its visual style
alone, but unfortunately due to the overwhelming headache that it
caused, I can’t even do that. I give Renaissance 1 out of 5
stars.
